BBC Radio 4 has a 5 part mini series playing this week about a British couple adopting from China (fictional). It has the unimaginative title of "China Girl". If you go to the website here you can listen online, the last part is on Friday. Its written by Tom Fry who has two children adopted from China so its a process he knows. First episode is only available for another 3 or 4 days so if you are interested check it out soon.
I don't think its particularly good and yet I have found myself rushing to listen to each episode the minute the school bus has wisked L & B off to school and have been enjoying it in a guilty pleasure sort of a way. Today's episode irritated me quite a lot I found myself wanting to interrupt them every few minutes with my
"opinions". I suppose its like that with any subject you have personal
experience of because no-one ever feels exactly like you do, their
experience is different, their feelings, their thought process, their
truth.
Also, I find the husband and wife a bit annoying (okay quite a lot annoying) and its very distracting to me the way Sophie Thompson sounds so much like her sister Emma, not that it isn't a lovely voice because it is! Actually, for me its strange hearing any British voices discussing adopting from China as with the exception of Barefoot Jo I don't know any British families with children from China. Well, I've come across them on discussion boards etc. but Jo's family is the only one I've met in Real Life. I'm just not used to hearing the British accent talking China adoption.
The UK International Adoption process is a little bit different to the one we completed here in the US but I've heard tell of The Panel that is mentioned in China Girl. Once you've completed your Home Study with a Social Worker you go before a Panel who then give their opinion on your suitability to adopt. It seems such a bizarre set up to me, I don't think it adds any real value to the "potential parent vetting" (that's what the Home Study is for) but maybe I think that because I'm pretty sure S and I would never have passed Panel.
Anyway, I'll be tuning in tomorrow to see what crazy Nick and Naomi get up to next with Luo Ning!
